Windmill & Irrigation freeze

The windmill was installed this week. It is intended to provide aeration to the pond on #1. The windmill provides power to run a small air compressor which provides oxygen through a complex of three diffusers located through out the pond. This will help in clarification and allow microbiological enzymes and bacteria to do their jobs in reducing carbon build-up. We are very excited about this project.

Thursday night we had two irrigation lines remain on. The temperature dipped to 23F. As a result of this situation a major buildup of ice occurred in two different areas on the course. Ugh!!!. We may have lost a tree due to this. We sure don't need this to happen.

The crew is doing a great job in edging bunkers, cart paths and cleaning up the landscapes around the clubhouse and parking lot areas. I have got the best crew in the world. What a wonderful job they are doing.

Weather conditions and projects

This week we are continuing to edge bunkers and cart paths. So far the weather has not changed since my last post. The aerated greens have not really changed for the better because of the winter weather conditions. We really need some warmer nights. The forcast for the rest of this week does not look so good for growing conditions. We have marked out some areas throughout the course that we are going to let grow to save some man power and for budget savings. I believe this will not only save labor but will also enhance the visual looks of the course. We have also designated six to eight bunkers to either be filled in or turned into grass bunkers.

Seems like we are getting our February weather here at the first two days of April. Windy, snow, hail and cold. Aerification of the greens went well last week but they still look like they did last week. We need some warmer temperatures during the day as well as at night. Low twenties at night does not make for good growing conditions.

This week we have started edging bunkers as well as cart paths. Anything to stay warm.

Aerification Day Two

Sunday afternoon we aerated eight greens and picked up cores on three of those eight. Monday we aerated the other twelve greens, picked up cores on all those greens but one. We applied sand and brushed eighteen out of twenty greens. What a great crew we have. Makes all the difference. Today we hope to open the first nine holes to players by eleven a.m. if everything goes as planned. Right now it is twenty degrees so I don't expect an early start. Ugh.

March, 21, 2010 Aerification

This week we are aerifying greens starting with this afternoon. So far we have aerated eight greens, picked plugs on four of those eight. Giving favorable weather conditions the next two days we should be on track with completing all twenty by the end of Tuesday, March 23rd. Aerification allows water, oxygen and nutrients from fertilizer applications to penetrate the soil. Aerification also helps decrease compaction of the greens surface and helps reduce thatch.
